The facilitated activities in these workshops are generally seen as chores. In the domestic context we perceive these tasks as being disgraceful and boring and we perform them without engagement, as quickly as possible. However, taking care for each other and our environment is becoming increasingly important in an overstrained world. Housekeeping and most care tasks are characterized by a repetitive element, if performed well, these routines have the appearance of a ritual and therefore they have spiritual potential. The practical nature of the workshops provides the opportunity to be part of a social and physical process; the workshops have a therapeutic effect. Huishoudschool is a recovery place for objects and people.

Bed Bath – Performance by Emmeline de Mooij. How do you properly wash a fragile patient? Where do you start? Can the soft and caring touch facilitate the healing process? And can art benefit in the same way as a frail and damaged body of the intimacy of a cleansing touch? The idea that healthcare can benefit from art is widely considered, but what can healthcare do for art? These questions sparked the idea for the Bed Bath Performance in which Emmeline de Mooij follows the protocol of a classic Bed Bath as performed in nursing homes by nurses and care takers. She will gently wash a damaged and orphaned sculpture, in a respectful and loving way.

Exercise for Dying – performance and workshop by Emmeline de Mooij and Giene Steenman. Participants bring their own full vacuum cleaner bag, the content of this bag is the basis for a meditative workshop. Dust is the result of degradation and decay and a confrontation with mortality. Exercise for Dying sets of with contemplating our own mortality and moves through the performance of repetitive acts such as sweeping, dusting and brushing, to free space and the possibility of reflection. Cleaning and housekeeping is often done in seclusion. In our homes we make sure the cleaning is done before the guests arrive and professional cleaners do the job often very early in the morning, before the day begins. Emmeline de Mooij and Giene Steenman will guide you through Huishoudschool 2: an exercise for dying. Confrontation and rehearsal as self-medication.

Golden Joinery – clothing repair workshop. Repair is an act of patience and care. At its best, it encourages a cautious handling of the world, a special form of attention, an awareness imbued with hope. As opposed to consuming something new, the act of repair embodies a sense of commitment and trust. Participants are asked to bring a beloved and damaged garment. Inspired by an old Japanese tradition where broken ceramics are repaired with golden paint, fashion designer Saskia van Drimmelen and director Margreet Sweerts will guide us to repair our ragged clothes with a golden thread.

De werkzaamheden die aan bod komen in de workshops behoren tot het huishoudelijke domein. Meestal doen we deze karweitjes met tegenzin en zo snel mogelijk. Toch hebben huishoudelijke en verzorgende taken, vooral door het repetitieve element, veel weg van rituelen. Ze hebben daarmee spirituele potentie. De verzorging van onze naasten en onze omgeving wordt in een overspannen wereld steeds betekenisvoller. Huishoudschool is een uitwisseling van kennis rondom huishoudelijke taken en zal het huishoudelijk domein de spirituele status verlenen, die het toekomt. Door de puur-praktische aard bieden de workshops de mogelijkheid om het lichaam deel te laten zijn van een sociaal proces en hebben daarmee een therapeutische werking. Huishoudschool is een herstellingsoord voor dingen en mensen.
Huishoudschool 1
Bedbad – performance door Emmeline de Mooij. Hoe was je een kwetsbare zieke? Waar begin je? Hoe zorg je ervoor dat de intimiteit van het aanraken van een naakt en broos lichaam liefdevol en respectvol verloopt, zodat het genezingsproces bevorderd wordt? En kan de kunst, in de vorm van een verweesd en verloederd sculptuur, ook van deze liefdevolle aanraking profiteren? Er wordt veel nagedacht over wat kunst kan betekenen voor gezondheidszorg, maar wat kan gezondheidszorg betekenen voor kunst?
Geïnspireerd door deze vragen toont kunstenaar Emmeline de Mooij met het uitvoeren van een klassiek bedbad, hoe een beschadigd en onbegrepen beeld wordt gewassen met respect en aandacht voor zelfzorg en inspraak.

Exercise for Dying – performance en workshop door Emmeline de Mooij en Giene Steenman. De deelnemers brengen hun eigen volle stofzuigerzak mee, waarvan de inhoud de basis vormt voor een meditatieve workshop. Stof is het resultaat van afbraak en verval, een confrontatie met sterfelijkheid, met de eindigheid van het bestaan. Door middel van het uitvoeren van repetitieve handelingen als vegen, afstoffen en borstelen, wordt gaandeweg de mogelijkheid tot reflectie en het vrijmaken van ruimte geschapen.
Schoonmaken komt vaak in afzondering tot stand. Thuis, zelden met gasten erbij, en professionele schoonmakers werken meestal in de vroege ochtenduren, voordat het echte leven begint. In Huishoudschool 2 begeleiden Emmeline de Mooij en Giene Steenman de deelnemers in een oefening voor de dood. Confrontatie en repetitie als zelfmedicatie.

Golden Joinery – Het met de hand herstellen van een versleten object is een zorgvuldig gebaar. Het staat voor een zorgzame relatie met de wereld, een speciale vorm van aandacht. Tijdens deze workshop leren we om te repareren en hiermee de schade, het litteken en de ouderdom te benadrukken. Golden Joinery is geïnspireerd door de Japanse techniek Kintsugi, waarbij gebroken porselein wordt geheeld met goud. Modeontwerpster Saskia van Drimmelen en regisseur Margreet Sweerts vertaalden dit gebaar naar kleding. Tijdens de workshop maken we littekens; een eerbetoon aan imperfectie.
